The Introduction to Bird Identification in the Northeast series is intended for beginning birders. Five volumes are tentatively planned: Volume 1 (Backyard Birds); Volume 2 (Roadside Birds); Volume 3 (Woodland Birds); Volume 4 (Wetland Birds); and Volume 5 (Shoreline Birds). Each tape will cover 20 or more species in detail.

We feel that an efficient way for a beginner to become familiar with a particular group of animals or plants is to become well-acquainted with a small group of species. We carefully selected the approximately 100 species to be covered in the five volumes of this series to ensure that the most common and visible species are covered (this means that a large number of all individuals seen can be correctly identified quickly). We also chose species that cover a broad selection of the taxonomic groups present so that the full diversity of bird types are introduced. Finally, we also stress proper identification techniques so that the viewer is able to progress easily to more advanced tapes and books. The emphasis in the tapes is on learning and there are frequent quizzes, with familiar birds in unusual positions or lighting conditions to keep you on your toes! The relatively small number of species covered in depth in each tape keep the beginner from being swamped and frustrated by the large number of species that may theoretically occur in an area. We also introduce other aspects of birds such as their behaviour to help take the viewer beyond simple identification of species.
