In Volume 1 of the Bird Identification in the Northeast series the viewer is introduced in depth to 20 of the most common species found near human dwellings. These are often the first birds that catch a person's attention when they become interested in birds. For each species introduced there is nearly three minutes of footage of different individuals, different plumages, and different viewing conditions. Although it is part of a five volume series, it can be viewed by itself and is designed to be self-contained. As in other tapes in this series, ample use is made of all sorts of teaching tools, including split feame video caomparisons and on-screen lables:

The species covered in detail are: blue jay, northern cardinal, black-capped chickadee, American goldfinch, house sparrow, house finch, European starling, common grackle, brown-headed cowbird, mourning dove, downy woodpecker, white-breasted nuthatch, brown creeper, Baltimore oriole, indigo bunting, rose-breasted grosbeak, ruby-throated hummingbird, white-throated sparrow, white-crowned sparrow, and dark-eyed junco.
Other species covered to some extent are: orchard oriole, purple finch, Carolina chickadee, and hairy woodpecker.
